“Green serpentine rock symbolizing transformation and grounding.

The Green Rock

November 07, 20252 min read

Sometimes, the most unexpected things carry the deepest meaning.

This is a story about a rock I almost walked past—a reminder that even the simplest pieces of nature can hold our biggest life lessons.

I almost missed it.

Green serpentine rock symbolizing transformation and grounding.

Tucked at the foot of the driveway, half-buried in the earth, it had been there all along–a big, beautiful green rock.

As we finished taking the last load from my parents’ house, the rock stopped me. Maybe it was the soft mossy green color. Maybe it was the stillness. Or maybe it was just whispering, “Take me home.”

I love rocks. I don’t need every rock I find, but sometimes my energy is pulled in—and when that happens, I’ve learned to listen. Once I get a rock home and start learning about it, its purpose always seems to reveal itself.

This one turned out to be serpentine—a stone of transformation, rebirth, and new beginnings. I smiled when I read that. It fits perfectly. Serpentine reminds us that life, just like a snake, is full of twists and turns, and every now and then, we’re asked to shed the old to make room for something new. It’s about healing, protection, wisdom, and grounding ourselves back into the rhythm of nature when life feels upside down.

That green rock had watched it all. It sat quietly at the edge of my parents’ driveway—watching, listening, holding space for every transition. That little house was where my dad passed and where my mom’s Parkinson’s began to unfold. It was literally a house of transformation.

Now the rock sits in my backyard here in Idaho. My dad never got to see this home—I know he would have loved it. My mom lights up when I send her pictures of the changing seasons. And every time I look out my kitchen window and see that green rock, I smile.

It’s here to remind me of the lessons life keeps teaching: that change is sacred, endings are only beginnings in disguise, and love—like stone—stands the test of time.

God speaks to me through nature.
And sometimes, He uses a rock.

💚 Maybe we all have a “green rock”—something solid that reminds us to stay grounded through life’s seasons of change
